Where to Eat in Harrogate: Restaurants, Pubs and Bars I Actually Go To

Harrogate is famous for one tea room, but you will eat much better than tea and scones here if you know where to go. This is my honest list of where to eat in Harrogate: restaurants, pubs and bars I’ve actually been to, plus one my family keeps telling me to try. No paid placements, no places I’ve only read about dressed up as favourites.
Most of these are in or near the town centre. If you’re still sorting the rest of your trip, start with my guides to things to do in Harrogate and where to stay in Harrogate.
Last checked: October 2026. Restaurants change hands and menus, so check the venue’s own website before you go.
My Quick Picks
- My favourite bar: Three’s a Crowd
- My favourite food: Phranakhon (Thai)
- Best for vegans: Paradise Tap & Taco
- Best beer and pizza: Major Tom’s Social
- Most impressive pub building: The Winter Gardens (yes, it’s a Wetherspoon)
- Classic Harrogate treat: Bettys
Where to Eat in Harrogate: My Favourites
1. Three’s a Crowd
If I had to pick one place in Harrogate for a drink, it’s this one. Three’s a Crowd is probably my favourite, and it’s a great bar. It calls itself a modern gastropub, with a seasonal British menu that changes often, a hand-picked wine list and a Sunday roast. Dogs are welcome too.
Where: 11 West Park.
2. Phranakhon
Great food, and one of my favourite places to eat in town. Phranakhon does Thai small plates, tapas-style, so the best way to eat here is to order a few dishes and share them.
3. Paradise Tap & Taco
Mexican street food and craft beer, tucked away at the back of Oxford Street. This is my favourite vegan-friendly place in Harrogate: the menu has meat, vegetarian and vegan options, so mixed groups don’t have to compromise.
Good to know: it’s walk-in only, no reservations.
4. Major Tom’s Social
Good beer and pizza, which is really all I need to say. Major Tom’s is a laid-back bar on The Ginnel serving craft beer and real ale (lots of it from Yorkshire breweries) alongside stone-baked pizzas made on site. It describes itself as “a youth club for grown ups”, which is about right.

5. The Winter Gardens (Wetherspoon)
I’ll be honest: I love a Spoons, and I know people will judge me for it. But the Harrogate one is something else. It’s in the former Royal Baths on Parliament Street. The Winter Gardens were originally built so visitors to the baths could relax and stroll indoors whatever the weather, and the pub kept the name. Don’t miss the staircase down into the bar. It’s beautiful.
For American visitors: Wetherspoon is a UK pub chain known for cheap food and drinks. Most branches are nothing special to look at. This one is worth a visit for the building alone.
6. The Fat Badger
A proper traditional pub on Cold Bath Road in the Montpellier Quarter, sharing a Georgian building with the White Hart Hotel. Expect cask ales, modern British pub food and a part-covered, heated beer garden you can use year-round. They do a Sunday roast too.
Want to stay right upstairs? Check prices at the White Hart Hotel.
7. The Drum and Monkey
A long-established seafood restaurant in the Montpellier Quarter. If you’re craving fish and seafood, this is the one.

8. Cold Bath Brewing Co. and YUZU
Cold Bath is a Harrogate brewery with its own taproom on King’s Road, opposite the Convention Centre. The taproom has no kitchen of its own. The food comes from YUZU next door in the Clubhouse, serving Asian fusion dishes like katsu, ramen, bao buns and wings.
9. Lilypad
A bar and restaurant further up King’s Road serving Asian and South American small plates, with craft beer on tap and outdoor seating. It’s a good pairing with Cold Bath if you’re making an evening of King’s Road.
10. Farmhouse
An independent all-day restaurant off Station Parade, underneath the Everyman cinema. Breakfast is the big thing here, alongside burgers, salads, seafood and vegan and vegetarian dishes.
11. The Ivy
The Ivy is on Parliament Street, close to Valley Gardens, Harrogate Theatre and the Turkish Baths. It’s a stylish but relaxed brasserie that works for a weekday lunch or a special dinner.
12. Bettys
You can’t write about eating in Harrogate without Bettys. The original café tea rooms are at 1 Parliament Street, with a shop at the front selling cakes and treats to take home. Bettys takes limited reservations; otherwise you walk in and may have to wait. For afternoon tea there and elsewhere, see my full guide to afternoon tea in Harrogate.

On My List: Giggling Squid
I haven’t eaten here yet, but family who live nearby say it’s great, so it’s next on my list. Giggling Squid is a Thai restaurant on John Street, about five minutes’ walk from the train station, with veggie and vegan options.

Familiar Names
Travelling with fussy eaters or just want something you know? I’ve been to Zizzi, Wagamama, All Bar One and Five Guys in Harrogate, and yes, there’s a McDonald’s. Nothing wrong with any of them, but with the independents above on your doorstep, I’d save the chains for a quick lunch.
Where to Eat in Harrogate as a Vegan
My top pick is Paradise Tap & Taco. Farmhouse also does vegan and vegetarian dishes, and Giggling Squid lists veggie and vegan options. Wherever you go, look at the menu online first, since vegan choices change with the menu.
Where to Stay Near the Best Food
Most places on this list are in or near the town centre, so staying central makes evenings out easy. My Harrogate hotel guide covers the best areas. Use the map below to compare what’s available for your dates.
Make a Day of It
Pair lunch with a walk through Valley Gardens, or base yourself in Harrogate and head out on one of my day trips from Harrogate. Back in time for dinner, of course. York is an easy trip too: here’s my list of things to do in York.
FAQ: Eating Out in Harrogate
Where should I eat in Harrogate for the first time?
Do Bettys once for the experience, then eat at the independents. My personal favourites are Three’s a Crowd for drinks and Phranakhon for food.
Is Harrogate good for vegans?
Yes. Paradise Tap & Taco is my top pick, and Farmhouse and Giggling Squid also have vegan options. Check the latest menus online before you go.
Where can I get good beer in Harrogate?
Major Tom’s Social for craft beer and pizza, Cold Bath Brewing Co. for beer brewed on site, and the Fat Badger for cask ales in a traditional pub.
Do I need to book restaurants in Harrogate?
It depends on the place. Some, like Paradise Tap & Taco, are walk-in only, while Bettys takes limited reservations. For dinner on a Friday or Saturday, booking ahead wherever you can is the safe bet.
Is the Harrogate Wetherspoon worth visiting?
Honestly, yes. The Winter Gardens is in the former Royal Baths, and the building (that staircase!) alone makes it worth a look.
