What we collect and why

When you join our email list

When you sign up for our newsletter or download a free guide (such as a trip planner or map), we collect your email address, your first name if you give it, and optionally where you’re travelling from. We also record which guide you signed up for and which Yorkshire areas interest you, so we can send you relevant content.

  • Why: to send you the guide you asked for and our newsletter with travel ideas, new guides and occasional recommendations.
  • Legal basis: your consent. You can unsubscribe at any time using the link at the bottom of every email.
  • Provider: our email list is managed by Kit (kit.com). Kit also tells us whether emails are opened and links are clicked, which helps us write better emails.

When you contact us

If you use our contact form or email us, we receive your name, email address and whatever you write in your message.

  • Why: to reply to you.
  • Legal basis: our legitimate interest in answering your enquiry.

When you leave a comment

If comments are open and you leave one, we collect the name, email address and website you enter, plus your IP address and browser type to help detect spam. Your comment and name are shown publicly.

WordPress may send an anonymised string created from your email address (a “hash”) to Gravatar to check whether you have a profile picture there. Gravatar’s privacy policy: https://automattic.com/privacy/. [Delete this paragraph if you turn off Gravatar or comments.]

  • Legal basis: our legitimate interest in running a comment section and keeping out spam.
