York in winter is a different city from the one you see in summer. The days are short and cold, but the medieval streets fill with Christmas lights, the Christmas market takes over the city centre, and there’s a city-centre ice rink and a pantomime. In February, the Vikings come back to town.

I live in the Yorkshire Dales, and this guide covers what’s on in York from November to February 2026–27, which indoor sights are worth your time on a cold day, and how to plan a winter trip. Everything here is researched and checked against official sources.

Is York Worth Visiting in Winter?

Yes, especially from mid-November to early January, when York is at its most festive. The trade-off is short days and cold, often wet weather, so plan your outdoor sightseeing (the city walls, the Shambles, a river walk) for the middle of the day, and save the museums for the dark afternoons. January is the quietest month, and February brings two of York’s biggest free and family events: the Ice Trail and the Viking Festival.

York at Christmas: November and December

The York Christmas Market

York’s Christmas market runs from 12 November to 21 December 2026 on Parliament Street and St Sampson’s Square. It’s open 10.30am to 7pm (5pm on the last day) and closed on Tuesdays, and more than 80% of the traders are from Yorkshire. For opening times, the best time to go and what to buy, read my full guide to the York Christmas Market.

Ice Skating in York

For winter 2026–27, York has a city-centre ice rink again. THOR’S on ICE is in the Museum Gardens, behind York Art Gallery, from 13 November 2026 to 3 January 2027. It’s run by the team behind THOR’S Tipi, the festive bar in the gardens. Book your session online before you go.

Outside the centre, Yorkshire’s Winter Wonderland at York Designer Outlet runs from mid-November to early January, with a large outdoor ice rink, a funfair and Santa’s grotto. It’s handy if you’re travelling with kids or want to combine skating with some outlet shopping.

Christmas at York Minster

York Minster holds its Christmas Tree Festival from 28 November 2026 to 5 January 2027. Through Advent there are services including Nine Lessons and Carols, plus candlelit carol concerts, and tickets for the popular ones are released in advance, so check the Minster’s website early. For ordinary sightseeing, an adult ticket costs £20 and is valid for a year, and you can add the 275-step tower climb for £6. Sightseeing hours are 9.30am to 4pm Monday to Saturday, and 12.45pm to 2.30pm on Sundays. Book on the official York Minster website.

Panto at York Theatre Royal

If you’ve never seen a British pantomime, December is the time to try one. This year’s York Theatre Royal panto is Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, from 4 December 2026 to 3 January 2027.

Christmas at Castle Howard

The most popular winter day out near York is Christmas at Castle Howard. This year’s theme is A Dickens of a Christmas, with the house decorated around Dickens’ stories, from 12 November to 3 January. Adult tickets start from £24, and all Christmas tickets must be booked in advance. Bus 81 runs from Station Avenue in York and takes about an hour, or see Castle Howard tickets and tours.

Other Yorkshire Christmas Markets

If you’re staying a few days, you can add another market. In 2026, Whitby’s runs 13 to 15 November, Leeds has one from 19 November to 23 December, Grassington in the Dales holds its Christmas markets on 28 November and 5 December, and Knaresborough’s is on 5 and 6 December. Note that Harrogate’s Christmas market is not running in 2026. Heading out to the countryside too? See my guide to the Yorkshire Dales in winter.

York in January and February

York Ice Trail

On 6 and 7 February 2027, ice sculptures appear across the city centre for the York Ice Trail. It’s free, it’s family-friendly, and the 2027 theme is “Legends Unleashed”, with sculptures inspired by legends and folklore.

JORVIK Viking Festival

From 8 to 14 February 2027, over the February school holidays, the JORVIK Viking Festival brings living history camps, talks, workshops, a candlelit feast and a march of Viking warriors through the city. Some events are free, and others are ticketed through the festival website. If you’re in York that week, combine it with a visit to the Jorvik Viking Centre itself.

Best Things to Do in York on a Cold Day

York has enough indoor sights to fill several winter days. These are the ones I’d put first:

  • York Minster: allow a couple of hours, more if you climb the tower.
  • National Railway Museum: free entry, open 10am to 5pm. I’d allow half a day.
  • Jorvik Viking Centre: tickets from about £17.50, and a natural pairing with the Viking Festival in February.
  • York Castle Museum: £18 for a ticket valid for a year.
  • Merchant Adventurers’ Hall: £7.50 for a ticket valid for a year.
  • Yorkshire Museum: £10, open Tuesday to Sunday, 10am to 5pm.
  • A ghost walk: dark evenings are made for them. The Original Ghost Walk starts at 8pm from the King’s Arms and costs £10, or browse York ghost tours.

Planning to see several of these? Compare the cost with the Visit York Pass, which covers the Minster, Jorvik, the Castle Museum, Clifford’s Tower and more. For the full list, see my guide to the best things to do in York.

A Winter Weekend in York: How I’d Plan It

  1. Day 1 morning: walk a stretch of the city walls while it’s light, then York Minster.
  2. Day 1 afternoon: the Shambles and the Christmas market (if it’s not a Tuesday), then a skate in the Museum Gardens as it gets dark.
  3. Day 1 evening: a ghost walk or the panto.
  4. Day 2: the National Railway Museum and Jorvik, or a day trip to Castle Howard for its Christmas house.

For a longer plan, follow my York itinerary and swap outdoor stops for indoor ones on wet days.

Tips for Visiting York in Winter

  • Book early for Christmas weekends. Book hotels, Minster carol tickets, Castle Howard and the panto well ahead if you’re coming on a December weekend.
  • Visit the market on a weekday if you can, and remember it’s closed on Tuesdays.
  • Check Christmas and New Year opening. Many attractions change their hours or close over the holidays, so check before you plan those days.
  • Pack for cold and wet. Waterproof shoes with grip make the cobbles and the wall steps much more pleasant.
  • Coming from abroad? When I travel I use Airalo eSIMs, always a single-country plan, including in the UK before I moved here. It’s a little pricier than a local SIM, but it works really well and it’s ready when you land.
  • Arriving on a day trip with luggage? Leave your bags at luggage storage near York station. Coming up from London? See my guide to getting from London to York.

Where to Stay in York in Winter

In winter, I’d stay inside or just outside the city walls, so you can walk back from an evening ghost walk or the panto. My guide to where to stay in York breaks down the best areas and hotels, or see places to stay in York.
