York Christmas Market 2026: Dates, Tips and What to Expect

York’s Christmas market is one of the best in Britain, and it’s easy to see why. Wooden chalets line the streets a few minutes from York Minster, the medieval lanes are strung with lights, and the whole city leans into Christmas for six weeks.
I live about an hour away in the Yorkshire Dales, and this is the guide I’d send any friend planning a festive trip to York: the 2026 dates and opening times, the changes this year (it’s now closed on Tuesdays), when to go to avoid the worst crowds, and how to turn a market visit into a proper Christmas weekend in Yorkshire.

What to Expect at York’s Christmas Market
The market is often still called by its old name, the St Nicholas Fair. Alpine-style wooden chalets fill Parliament Street and spill into St Sampson’s Square, and the organisers say more than 80% of the traders are from Yorkshire. That’s what makes it worth the trip: rather than the same imported trinkets you see at every city market, you’ll find local makers, Yorkshire food and drink, and gifts you can’t pick up anywhere else.
Expect handmade crafts, decorations, candles, jewellery, cheese, fudge, gin and plenty of hot food and mulled drinks. It’s not a huge market (you can walk it in under an hour), but that’s the point: the market is only part of the experience. The real magic is having it in a medieval city, with the Shambles, the Minster and the lights all within a five-minute walk.
When to Visit (and When to Avoid)
York gets very busy in the run-up to Christmas, especially at weekends, when coach trips arrive from all over the country. A few tips:
- Go on a weekday morning if you can. Wednesday and Thursday mornings are far calmer than Saturday afternoons.
- Remember it’s closed on Tuesdays. This is new for 2026 and will catch people out.
- Stay for the late afternoon. It gets dark around 4pm in December, and the market and the lit-up streets look their best for the last few hours before closing at 7pm.
- Mid-November is quieter than December. If you mostly want the atmosphere and the shopping, the first two weeks are the sweet spot.
- Saturdays in December are the busiest days of the year in York. If that’s your only option, arrive by 10.30am.
How to Get to York’s Christmas Market
- By train: the easiest option. York station is a 15-minute walk from the market, and direct trains run from London King’s Cross (about 2 hours), Edinburgh, Manchester, Leeds and Harrogate. Trains are busy on December weekends, so book a seat. See my guide to getting from London to York.
- By car: don’t try to park in the centre. York’s Park & Ride sites on the ring road have frequent buses into town and are far less stressful than hunting for a space.
- From abroad: fly into Manchester (about 2 hours by direct train) or London and take the train north. Heading out into the countryside afterwards? You can compare car hire on Booking.com.
Make a Day of It: Christmas in York
The market alone is a couple of hours. These are the best ways to fill the rest of a festive day in York:
York Minster at Christmas
York Minster is my favourite building in the city, and it’s at its best in December. Go in for a look round (your ticket is valid for a year), then come back for a carol service or Choral Evensong. The big carol concerts are ticketed and sell out early, often by the autumn, so book as soon as dates are released. Even if you miss out, seeing the Minster lit up at dusk on a December evening is free and unforgettable.
The Shambles and Shambles Market
The Shambles, York’s famous crooked medieval street, is a two-minute walk from the Christmas market and looks wonderful with its windows dressed for Christmas. Behind it, the everyday Shambles Market has its own stalls and a food court, which is a good place to escape the main market crowds for lunch.
Tea at Bettys
Bettys on St Helen’s Square is a short walk from the market, and its Christmas cakes and window displays are a York tradition. Expect a queue. If you want the full afternoon tea experience, the original Bettys is in Harrogate, 38 minutes away by train: see my guide to afternoon tea in Harrogate.
A Ghost Walk After Dark
When the market closes at 7pm, join an evening ghost walk. Dark December nights suit York’s ghost stories perfectly. The Original Ghost Walk leaves from the King’s Arms on King’s Staith at 8pm, or you can book a York ghost tour in advance.
York’s Museums
If the weather turns, the Jorvik Viking Centre, York Castle Museum (with its recreated Victorian street) and the free National Railway Museum are all indoors. Visiting several? The Visit York Pass covers the Minster, Jorvik, the Castle Museum and more than 30 other attractions.

More Yorkshire Christmas Markets and Events in 2026
Staying a few days? Yorkshire has plenty more festive days out, many within an hour of York:
- Castle Howard at Christmas (12 November 2026 to 3 January 2027): the stately home 30 minutes from York is decorated room by room with a Dickens theme this year. See Castle Howard tickets and tours.
- Whitby Christmas Market and Festival (13 to 15 November): on the harbourside, with fireworks. Whitby is about an hour and a half from York by car.
- Leeds Christmas Market (from 19 November): in City Square, 25 minutes from York by train.
- Christmas at Harewood House (6 November 2026 to 3 January 2027): a stately home between Leeds and Harrogate, decorated for Christmas, with a Little Birds Christmas market in November. Callie and I will be there this year selling her handmade jewellery, so come and say hello.
- The Great Yorkshire Christmas Fair (26 to 29 November): a big indoor ticketed fair at the Great Yorkshire Showground in Harrogate.
- Grassington Christmas markets (28 November and 5 December): a Dales village market, ideal if you want something small and traditional (more in my guide to the Yorkshire Dales in winter).
- Knaresborough Christmas Market (5 and 6 December) and Little Bird Made in Harrogate’s Valley Gardens (5 and 6 December): easy to combine in one day from Harrogate.
- Beverley Festival of Christmas (13 December): a one-day market with around 120 stalls across the town centre, starting with a Christmas parade.
One thing to know: the big Harrogate Christmas Market isn’t running in 2026. For everything else to do in the spa town, see my guide to the best things to do in Harrogate.
Where to Stay for York’s Christmas Market
Book early. Hotels inside York’s city walls fill up fast for December weekends, and prices climb the closer you get. Staying inside the walls means you can walk to the market in the morning before the day-trippers arrive and stroll back after a ghost walk without a taxi. Compare places to stay in York, or use the map below to see what’s near the market. My guide to where to stay in York covers the best areas and hotels.
If York is full or too pricey, Harrogate is 38 minutes away by train and makes a calmer base: see my guide to where to stay in Harrogate.
Tips for Visiting York at Christmas
- Dress for the weather. Yorkshire in December is cold and often wet. Waterproof shoes are a must on the cobbles.
- Book restaurants ahead on Friday and Saturday nights; walk-ins are hard in December.
- Bring a bag for your shopping, and expect most stalls to take cards.
- Check train times for the way home. Evening trains on December weekends are packed, so reserve a seat.
